“Close To You” is the latest song co-written by all three members of Slim & The Beast. The song is a lover’s protest, a story about the distances that life creates and the faith that keeps us together. The group wrote this song in New Orleans when they were an ocean away from their family and loved ones; the delicate acoustic guitars and three-part harmonies reveal Slim & The Beast at their most pure. The verse’s main melody, sung by twin brothers Aaron and Samuél Lopez-Barrantes, reflect the beauty of two voices trying to get back to each other. The final section of the bridge’s melancholic refrain, “Do you feel close to me? Is it in my heart or is it make me believe?” asks the eternal question when falling in love. The addition of a string quartet (inspired by “Eleanor Rigby” and arranged by Jules Schultheis) adds to the ephemeral, angelic beauty of true love. Do they remain together? Or do they separate? In the song’s final, swelling chorus, the trio suggests that despite the distances that life creates, true love may last just a little bit longer.
